Arlee Wedding Photography | Sierra + Tim

Arlee Wedding Photography by David Clumpner

Sierra and Tim came all the way from Washington, D.C. for their Montana wedding this summer.  Many of my clients do come from out of state to have a destination wedding in Montana but most, as is the case with Sierra, have a connection to Montana.  Sierra was raised in Arlee, which is where the wedding ceremony was held this fall (at her parents’ house!).  But, I was able to meet both Sierra and Tim earlier in the spring as they made a wedding planning trip out to Montana and we joined for elk steak dinner then took a trip up near St. Ignatius for one of the coolest engagement sessions I’ve ever photographed.

But the wedding day gave us fantastic weather, wonderful people, a cameo by a bear, and a beautiful, cultural experience to provide a nice complement to those great engagement photos!  Also, in a strange twist, I actually photographed Sierra’s Maid of Honor, Keesha, during the Invisible Montana personal project last winter.  I was documenting Keesha’s sister, Rose, and Rose’s boyfriend, Buck, around for a few hours but Keesha and her daughters were there, too!  And Rose and Buck not only attended this wedding but they hand made little buckskin pouches full of lavender for the out-of-state guests!

Many of Sierra and Tim’s east-coast friends were able to come out for this wedding, too, which was a fantastic experience for them.  During hair and makeup many of them took a trip up to the Bison Range, then we had a bear walk through the ceremony site midday, and there was a Native American blessing during the ceremony, too!  I live in Montana and don’t usually get to see all of those things at a wedding.  We had a very expressive flower girl, a perfectly minimal dress (I love it when the dress really fits the bride’s personality), and just even some tears and dancing out of a couple who promised me they wouldn’t cry or dance!

I’m not sure why Tim didn’t unbutton his shirt first before putting it on, but I prefer this ghost-like effect!

I like this shot because makeup is so rare on young girls, even at a wedding. This was a special day all around for this flower girl.

Will this cell phone be clunky and old fashioned-looking in 20 years?

Yep, in Montana the bears attend the weddings, too.

Sierra has Native American ancestry and her parents’ house is on the Flathead Reservation, so there were influences of this culture throughout the day.
