The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale is world-renowned for selling some of the best saddle bronc and bareback horses in the country. But another event at the sale is the wild horse race, which is a crowd favorite. In this event, eight wild horses are prepared in the chutes while teams of three wait outside. Once the race starts, one member of each team opens the chute gate while a second is holding a rope that is attached to a halter in the wild horse. The goal of the race is to get the wild horse under control, saddle it, get a rider aboard, then run the horse around the track that is ordinarily reserved for horse racing events. There's a seven-minute time limit on the event and it often takes nearly that time since the rider does not have reins or control of their horse. The most exciting moments of the event usually take place in the first minute as the team struggles to gain control of their horse.
