This is one of my favorite images of 2024. Not only is it one of the best ceremony photos I took, but the story behind it is incredible. In 2022, at Missoula's Queer Prom, I was asked to photograph the event not knowing what was coming. I had my flashes set up as Zooey proceeded to propose to Erin in front of a tear-laden group of Missoula's strongest queer, trans, and LGBTQ+ allies. It was a special, touching moment during a very difficult legislative session in Montana that had Zooey fighting for her rights as a trans person.
During their wedding, both Zooey and Erin wrote their own vows, which is always my preference because it leads to heart-wrenching moments like this one. Erin is a professional writer, as the author behind the popular trans new Substack, Erin in the Morning. Zooey is also a Representative to Montana's House.
What they fight for every day extends well beyond my comprehension, and the battles they face in this red state are beyond unfair, but I am honored to have been chosen to be able to document their day, which was filled with love, freedom, sequins, and respite from the outside world.
