I met the Mayes family last summer in Big Sky, Montana when I did family photos for them. Nina was planning a 50th birthday gathering for her husband this summer and kept in touch with me about doing a Day in the Life session with them. Once all the details were set I learned the location would be a totally new one for me: Lake Martin, Alabama! Also along were great family friends of the Mayes’s, guaranteeing there’d never be a shortage of craziness going on somewhere on the property.
Nina warned me ahead of time to bring my swim shorts as there’d be some swimming. What I underestimated is that we’d actually be spending almost the whole day in the water! Some of this was from a boat, much was off the dock house on a Maui Mat (a lot more fun than you’d imagine!), and even some tall jumps from the second story of the dock house. Also, some tubing behind the pontoon boat! Spending the day with these kids reminded me so much of the joy I had as a child doing the same thing, so it was a lot of fun to look through and edit the images afterwards. This set of images is a very classic “summer vacation at the lake” story. There were no big plans for the day, just a plan to let things unfold and have the kids mostly dictate the direction. Some of that included video games, some actual war games (with plastic guns), hide and seek, fishing, and of course, everything water.
