In the spring of 2017 I traveled to the tiny island of Makira in the Republic of Vanuatu. I took portraits of all 33 families and school portraits of all kindergarten and elementary students. In addition, I photographed the lives of the islanders, which included subjects like church, fishing, school, carving a dugout canoe, building a seawall, cooking over fire, and weaving. Upon returning the United States I spearheaded a crowdfunding campaign which funded books and portrait packages to be mailed back to every family and school child on the island.
